Our choir was given the amazing opportunity to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. We thoroughly enjoyed this once in a lifetime experience singing on this wonderful stage where so many great performers have stood before us.
A message received from Sheila Wilson composer of ‘Scrooge’, after our performance in London.
“ Dear teachers and children of St Mary’s Choir. Many congratulations on your superb performance of ‘Scrooge’ at The Royal Albert Hall!
I’m the composer and I really enjoyed watching it with my family. It was brilliant! Well done and congratulations again”.

Our school choir meets every Thursday lunchtime. At the moment our school choir consists of year 5 and 6 pupils, welcoming year 4 pupils in the summer term.
As a catholic school there are many opportunities within the year when our choir lead the whole school in singing. For example supporting our First Holy Communion children, our termly Mass in school, Feast days and more recently they were given the great privilege of leading the singing at the Diocesan Mass for The Heads and Deputy’s Conference Mass held in St Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle.
“I am writing to thank your marvellous choir for their magnificent singing at our Conference Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral. The Conference Mass is always special but the singing of the boys and girls of St Mary’s made it extra-special. In particular, I loved the version of “The Lord’s My Shepherd” that they sang between the readings- a beautiful tune performed beautifully. Their orderly movement from their seats to the singing position and back again demonstrated the eye for detail that underpinned the quality of the sound. You clearly have talented children and talented staff and you must be very proud of them.”
Joe Hughes – Director of Education for the Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle.
During the year St Mary’s Choir regularly perform within the local community, especially helping with fund- raising activities, including singing in The Bridges, Sunderland City Hospitals and joining with many other Sunderland schools in termly Singing Festivals.
St Mary’s Choir sang at the Manchester Arena in the Young Voices Concert, known as one of the largest children’s concert series in the world.
Here at St Mary’s we are very fortunate to have a wonderful, talented, enthusiastic school choir.
